the English Channel is one of the most challenging athletic feats in the
world, but it receives little press or attention from modern sports
enthusiasts. Not only have more people reached the top of Mt. Everest, but
more people have traveled into outer space than have successfully swum
across this 21- mile stretch of water. With its bone-chilling temperatures,
dangerously strong currents, toxic pollutants, and unpredictable weather,
the Channel continues to defeat all but a handful of its challengers. Remarkably, for the past 125 years, overweight but determined women have dominated the field, holding the most records including oldest crosser, most crossings, and most 2-way crossings. This program tracks the lives of three women and two men over several years, looking into the risks they take and their motivation to become part of the select group of people who have conquered the English Channel. They learn about their strength of character and their discipline, and they face personal demons as they swim for seemingly endless hours. Some make it triumphantly, some anti-climactically so, and some don’t make it at all. |
