Long
Gone follows the lives of six tramps for five years, men and women who
have chosen to travel wherever the railroad goes, instead of life in
mainstream society.
They are drifters, hobos and tramps, moving through the country's
heartland, a fiercely independent, floating population. Long Gone
allows the tramps to tell their own stories, captures this microcosm with
startlingly beautiful photography, seamless storytelling and original
music by Tom Waits. Theirs is an anachronistic world of anarchy and
hard-won survival. New York Slim is our articulate narrator, the unifying
hub between the characters, well-loved and respected by young and old
riders alike. From a world-weary Vietnam vet to a middle-class, adolescent
girl, Long Gone enters the private lives of its subjects. We
witness birth, death, addiction, violence and redemption. Chased by the
law, troubled by uncertain futures and mysterious pasts, some die, some
marry, some leave, most cannot.
