The Longest River

On the 17th of January 2004, an international team of rafters set off to conquer one of man's last great challenges. The White Nile is the longest river in the world, originating in the heart of Africa, it runs over 6,600 km through Uganda, Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. No one has ever succeeded in running the entire length of the river from the source to the sea.

Their journey began in Uganda on Lake Victoria. From here the team faced some of the toughest white water in the world, fierce wildlife and rebels. The Lord's resistance Army has waged a brutal 20-year war on the ugandan government, killing thousands of people in Northern Uganda.

As the team enters Sudan, home to the longest running civil war in history, they become the first civilians to cross from government territory to rebel territory since the resurgence of the civil war in 1983. In Sudan the team also traversed the Sudd, a vast inland swamp stretching 400 km, famous for imprisoning explorers for months in its shifting papyrus channels.

The team immersed themselves in the lives of the locals of The Nile. The observe the little documented Mandari tribe, exchange gifts with tribal kings and challenge Dinka warriors at wrestling. Their eventual arrive at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea heralded the successful culmination of an historical journey and fulfilling the dream that they had set out to conquer, to become the first team to travel the full length of the Nile from source to sea.
