Episode
1: In the squalor of a refugee camp in Benin, West Africa we meet Israel widor,
a member of a minority in Nigeria that has suffered from discrimination and
violence. For three years they have been waiting for their chance to go to the
United States and start a new life.
Dominicans Ricardo Rodriguez and Jose Garcia dream of playing Major league
Baseball. We follow them from a basenball camp in the Dominican Republic
through the decision of who will be selected for "spring training" in the
United States. For Jose and Ricardo, success could some day mean million dollar
contracts and better lives for their struggling families back home.
Naima is a beautiful Palestinian woman who falls in love with Hatem, a
first-generation Palestinian-American. With one brother dead and another
imprisoned during the first Intifada, Naima is determined to leave the West
Bank for America.
Episode
2: Nigerian refugee Israel and his family are eventually resettled in Chicago.
Though highly educated, he and his wife Ngozi's first year in America is
amrked by the stress of financial and health woes, leavened only by Israel's
unshakable optimism.
Before
Naima can emigrate from the West Bank to America, she must overcome the
difficult Visa process, unexpexted failure in school, and hardest of all -
her own sadness at leaving familiy and the only life she has known.
Pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez is put on the fast track to baseball success when the
young Dominican is among the first selected to go to the Dodger's Spring
training in Florida. Jose Garcia's path is more fraught with potential
failure as he tries to learn a new position.
Episode
3: Within weeks of her arrival in America Naima marries Hatem and they begin
life together as young newlyweds. Yet, with each failed job application, she
grows more homesick, while Hatem lands a job that will profoundly change the
couple's life.
Israel Nwidor lands a new job but cannot escape from racism at work. Life is no
easier for fellow refugee Barine Wiwa-Lawani, the sister of slain Nigerian
activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa. Living in Chicago with two teenage daughters, she
juggles three part-time jobs and dreams of opening her own African Restaurant.
Dominicans
Ricardo and Jose begin their minor league baseball careers with the Dodgers
popular Rookie League team in Great Falls Montana. But when a fellow Dominican
player is charged with a serious crime, all of the latin players feel the
impact.
