| Seldom in this century has society come full circle in the cycle of disease. From illness, to epidemic, to cure, polio is America's most notable exception. It came and went with the 20th Century and the nation was indelibly transformed by its presence. Those long polio summers served as a test of the American people's will to transcend pain and fear, and to coalesce their energies towards the conquest of a cruel virus. As today we live under the specter of AIDS, it is important for us to remember the way in which epidemic disease fundamentally changes who we are as a people and how we can rise to combat an unseen enemy. In the case of polio, we have a triumphant story that touches the heart of us all. | |||
