Porgy and Bess
Documentary (53 min.)

Porgy and Bess, An American Voice chronicles the story of Porgy as told through the media of novel, play and opera beginning in 1925 when a white southern aristocrat wrote a novel inspired by a brief newspaper article. The Gershwins' opera, first staged in 1935, received mixed reviews at best and many black objected to the cliched negative characterization of "Negroes" it contained. Controversies continued to surround later live productions and stage versions. Also featuring many star performers from the productions including Leontyne Price, Maya Angelou, Trevor Nunn and Diahann Carroll.
